Is My Child Horsey Enough for Camp?
If youāve asked yourself that ā youāre not alone.
Iāve heard it so many times:
āMy child isnāt horsey.ā
āTheyāve never been around animals.ā
āThey might be too nervous to ride.ā
And I always say the same thing:
They donāt have to love horses ā they just need to be open to the experience.
š“ Horses Are More Than Hobbies
At MeadowView Reins, our summer camps arenāt just about riding. We focus on equine-assisted learning ā a powerful, hands-on approach that helps children grow emotionally, socially, and mentally through connection with horses.
Equine-assisted learning is grounded in the understanding that horses possess an innate ability to reflect human emotions and behaviors, providing immediate feedback and fostering self-awareness in participants. That means even if your child is unsure, nervous, or quiet ā the horse responds in real time, helping them understand themselves in a new way.
Itās not magic. Itās science.
š Studies show that horses can interpret a human's facial expressions and emotional states.
š« They sense changes in breathing, heart rate, and stress levels, often mirroring what your child is experiencing internally.
š§ They donāt judge ā they simply reflect.
So no ā your child doesnāt have to be āhorsey.ā They just have to be human.
š¾ What Happens at Camp?
Our mornings are spent on the ranch ā building relationships with horses through brushing, leading, obstacle courses, team games, and quiet time. Some kids choose to ride, some donāt ā and both are absolutely okay. The point isnāt to become a rider. The point is to become more confident, self-aware, and emotionally grounded.
š¶ Afternoons by the Lake
After mornings with the animals, we head to beautiful Big Lake for paddleboarding, water safety, and adventure. Our camps include Paddle Canada certified instructors (yep, Iām one!) and all gear is provided.
Stand-up paddling is the perfect balance to the emotional learning that happens in the barn. Out on the water, kids learn:
Balance & focus
Trusting themselves
Resilience in trying something new
And letās be honest⦠they have a blast!
š This Camp Is for Your Child If Theyā¦
Like animals, even if theyāve never ridden a horse
Need time away from screens to reconnect with themselves
Have big emotions or struggle with confidence
Love the outdoors and trying new things
Thrive in smaller, supportive group environments
This camp isnāt about ribbons or perfect riding form.
Itās about growth, joy, and meaningful connection ā with horses, with nature, and with themselves.
š“ So⦠Is My Child Horsey Enough for Camp?
Yes.
Because this isnāt about loving horses.
Itās about discovering who you are ā through connection with a horse, through splashes in the lake, and through moments of challenge and calm.
Weāve had kids arrive nervous, unsure, and even a little scared⦠and leave standing taller, laughing louder, and knowing themselves more fully than ever before.
